Can a Pole Dance DVD
Really Teach Me To Pole Dance?

For many people, watching a pole dance DVD is a great way to learn, either as your primary method or as a supplement to group or private pole dancing classes. In fact, I highly recommend using pole dancing DVDs at home in addition to taking classes (assuming you also have a dance pole at home, of course!)

I know that pole dance DVDs aren't for everyone though, so I created this page to help you decide if DVDs are for you, or if you'd be better off learning to pole dance using another method.

One of the best things about using a pole dance DVD at home is that it can help you reinforce what you're learning in your pole dancing classes, and also expose you to new moves and variations when you're ready for them. DVDs can give you motivation to practice too, since it's always easier to practice along with a teacher, even if she's only on your TV or computer screen.

Here are some more benefits of learning from pole dancing DVDs:

  • A pole dance DVD is an affordable choice. At $25-$35 per DVD, you get a lot of bang for your pole dancing buck. Most instructional pole dancing DVDs will demonstrate 12-20 moves for about the same price as one hour of group pole dancing classes.
  • Convenience. If you work crazy shifts, have small children, or have a lot of commitments that make it hard for you to attend a 6 or 8 week session of pole dancing classes at the same time every week, a pole dance DVD allows you to work pole dancing into your busy life when you have the time.
  • Unlimited practice and review time. With group or private pole dancing classes, the clock is always ticking. You have only so much time to learn and practice. With a pole dance DVD you are free to return to those parts you need to review over and over again.

To be fair, not everyone enjoys learning from DVDs. The main disadvantage of course, is that in order to practice effectively, you will need your own dance pole for dancing at home.

A good quality dance pole isn't cheap, so many women prefer to take a class or two first to be sure they really enjoy pole dancing before investing in their own pole dancing pole. You'll also need enough space to install and safely use your pole at home.

Here are a couple of other potential drawbacks to learning pole dancing from DVDs at home:

  • You don't get feedback on whether you've got it right. Technology is getting pretty impressive these days, but a "virtual instructor" still can't give correction and feedback from a DVD! You may get frustrated if you can't do a particular move and don't know what you're doing wrong.
  • Unless you learn with a girlfriend or two (a great way to go by the way!) the social aspect is missing when you learn your pole dancing from DVDs.

Imagine practicing in your living room after the kids have gone to bed, curtains drawn tight so the neighbours won't see. You finally pull off the spin you've been working on all night!!! To resounding silence. Nobody knows what you just accomplished and there's no celebration when you finally get it right. For some people, the support of a group pole dancing class is a real motivator, and something to seriously consider.

  • Unless you head over to a girlfriend's house for the evening, you'll still be stuck at home. That's OK for some of us, but if you get housebound easily and need to get out, group pole classes or private pole dancing lessons might be your better bet.

Personally, I love using DVDs to learn new stuff, whether pole dancing or any other topic.

If you're considering buying a pole dancing DVD or two, you'll want to check out this page where you can read reviews of pole dancing DVDs.

The reviews contain impartial, objective descriptions of what's included on the DVD. There's also space for others to leave comments with their own opinions, to help you decide if it's right for you.

You can even leave your own comments if you own any of the DVDs listed. Or suggest one that's not yet listed and I'll add it to the review list. Others will thank you for it!
