Removable Dance Pole Information
A removable dance pole is a type of pole that is securely installed by way of a mounting system, yet is easily removed when desired. These are also known as semi-permanent poles. Friction fit poles are also removable, but because they have different features I've chosen to place them on a page of their own. You can read about them by clicking on the highlighted text above. A removable pole usually has some kind of an internal spring mechanism, although some use other types of designs. These poles require that you install a simple ceiling mount, over which the top of the pole fits to keep it in place. Depending on the type of flooring you have (carpet, hardwood, etc) you may need an additional floor pad for extra security.
Pictured here are examples of the Lil Mynx bolted ceiling mount (left) and a floor pad for use on hard flooring (right).
Best Uses
A removable pole might be the right choice for you if you want a relatively inexpensive pole that offers a good compromise between safety and convenience. This type of pole is fairly easy to take down if you need the space, yet safer than a friction fit pole because of the ceiling mount. Some good uses for this type of pole are:- in a home with limited space where a permanent pole may interfere with other uses of the room, a removable pole provides more options for use of the space
- if you need to be discrete about the use of your pole, yet are concerned about safety, this pole may be a good choice. The mount will provide a secure fit, but it's usually unnoticeable once the pole is removed.
- for the small studio owner who may need to use her space for other classes besides pole dancing, removable poles can provide this option while still ensuring the safety of class participants
A removable dance pole, while not quite as safe as a permanent pole, still offers a good degree of safety if it's installed and used according to the manufacturer's instructions. These poles are generally safer than any of the friction fit poles available, due to the fact that the top of the pole can "grab" the ceiling mount should the bottom shift out of place. A removable dance pole does require a bit of time and effort to ensure safe installation, and it's wise to spend some time getting used to your pole so that you know and understand its limits. These types of dance poles do require a fair bit of strength to move them into place and then tighten the mechanism that keeps them there. And if you plan to take your pole down and put it up frequently, this is something you'll have to get used to. However, the initial installation for a removable pole is not difficult. It generally requires only a few simple tools such as a drill and a screwdriver. These types of poles are relatively inexpensive, certainly less so than most types of portable dance poles. Because portable poles often come in several pieces, or have additional parts or components such as a carrying case, they tend to be the most expensive choice. Removable poles are generally easy to take down if you need the extra space, though it can be a challenge finding somewhere to store 8 or more feet of dance pole!
When considering dance pole safety, removable poles are one of the safest options next to a permanenty affixed dance pole due to the use of a bolted ceiling mount. The reason that a bolted mount increases the pole's safety is that the mount will have a small protrusion or lip, around which the top of the pole fits. With a friction fit pole, any shift at the base of the pole will often result in the entire pole coming down, since the distance between the floor and ceiling has effectively been lengthened by the shift. With nothing to keep the top of the pole in place, it can slide off the ceiling and come crashing down. With a bolted mount removable pole, the top of the pole will stay in place even if there is enough pressure applied to shift the base of the pole. This is due to the small lip that the top of the pole fits over. The user will feel the pole move and upon examination it will be apparent that the pole is no longer plumb, but most of the time the pole will remain upright. For this reason, a removable pole using a bolted mount system is generally considered safer than any of the friction fit models. Does this mean that a removable pole is fail safe? Of course not, but if you want the flexibility to be able to take your pole down whenever you like, without sacrificing a lot of safety, this may be the pole for you. Of course, there are other considerations to ensure you get maximum safety from your removable pole. For example, correct installation of the ceiling mount is essential to provide proper support for your pole. Always make sure you understand and follow the manufacturer's instructions to the letter so that you don't compromise your safety through an incorrect installation. By using common sense and following a few specific dance pole safety guidelines, you'll find that a removable dance pole ranks very high on the safety scale.
